Otoplasty

Ears that stick out from the side of the head are often a source of teasing and ridicule for children at school. This can have a devastating effect on the child involved. Otoplasty is most commonly performed on children aged six years and over and on adults.

Cosmetic procedures are also available for people with large ears and for those with congenital irregularities. Ear surgery can correct folded ear tips (lop ear), reshape long or offset earlobes and enhance small ears. It can also remedy an accidental injury, including the loss of an ear.

Procedure

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

The standard otoplasty ear surgery procedure brings the ears closer to the head. Incisions are made behind the ear to avoid visible scars after the operation. The ear surgery is performed under general anaesthetic for children and can be done under twilight anaesthesia or local anaesthetic for adults.

Results

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Patients are always pleased with the improvements to their appearance offered by ear surgery. Otoplasty brings proportion to the face where previously ears may have been too large or stuck out too much. While the results of easy surgery is cosmetic, most people, especially children, report an increase in self-confidence following their ear surgery procedure.
