Eyelid

The most visible signs of ageing tend to take place on our face. Many men and women say these signs of ageing impact on both their personal and professional lives. Dark circles or bags under the eyes, excessive skin or wrinkles surrounding the eyelids, a tired appearance or puffiness all occur as a part of ageing, and can be particularly prominent in males.

Eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) is a corrective procedure that can reduce dark circles or “bags” under the eyes, remove the excess wrinkles, and provide a more youthful appearance to the eyes. This procedure can also correct drooping upper lids, puffy bags above and below the eyes, extra upper-eyelid skin, and hanging lower-lid skin.

Procedure

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

Dr Dilip Gahankari usually performs blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery using local or general anaesthesia. He will assess and mark the excess eyelid skin before the operation. The incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids, to ensure that scarring is minimally visible. The excess skin and muscle is then removed along with the fat bulges. He will then suture the incisions with very fine sutures. In case of lower eyelids, excess skin and fat is removed conservatively to prevent the pull on the lower eyelid. In lower eyelids the scars are located just below the eyelash margin so that they are minimally visible. In some instances, laser technology may be used to smooth lower eyelid areas. Eyelid surgery may also include anti-aging injectables to firm fine lines and wrinkles.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

The healing process for the eyelid procedure is slightly longer than most other forms of cosmetic surgery; however, the benefits are long-lasting. Patients will have a more rested and youthful appearance. This procedure may result in some double or blurry vision for a few days, temporary swelling at the corners of the eyelids, and milia (tiny whiteheads). An extremely rare complication of eyelid surgery is blindness; however Dr Gahankari will discuss the procedure and the associated risks with you at your appointment. The stitches are removed in about 5-7 days after the eyelid surgery is completed. Post-operatively the improvement in appearance is usually noticeable after a week or so when the swelling and bruising has subsided, but it may take up to six weeks to see the full results of your eyelid surgery.
