Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can cause physical and emotional problems for some women. The weight of the breasts can impact on a woman’s shoulders, neck, and back and cause severe pain and discomfort. Furthermore, the weight of the breasts can cause them to drop and sag, which is often seen as unfavourable for women.  Additionally, the social implications of large breasts can affect a woman’s self-esteem, personal relationships and ability to do some every day and physical activities.

A breast reduction reduces the size and elevates the breasts, for a more taught, perky and full look. Thus, if your breasts are causing you discomfort, both emotional and physical, this procedure may be for you. Gold Coast plastic surgeon Dr Dilip has over 21 years experience in performing cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures, as well as a range of other surgical procedures.

Procedure

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

The breast reduction procedure involves the removal of fat, tissue, and skin, reducing the breasts’ size and enhancing their shape. There are a variety of surgical breast reduction techniques, including ones that occasionally involve liposuction. Therefore, Dr Gahankari will assess your needs at your initial consultation and determine the most appropriate technique. Dr Gahankari uses liposculpturing during the procedure to further enhance the shape and outcome of t. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthetic and the patient should be able to go home from hospital the day of the surgery.

Recovery

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO RECOVER?

You can expect to feel some pain and discomfort the first few of days after your breast reduction procedure, however Dr Gahankari will prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable during this initial period. The amount of time you need to recover from breast reduction will depend on your natural healing rate as well as the extent of surgery performed. However, you will be able to get up and walk around the same day of surgery.

You may need help getting dressed for the first few days, as you will not have full range of motion in your chest and shoulders at first. Most patients feel ready to drive and return to a desk job within one week, and can return to exercise 3 to 4 weeks after the breast reduction surgery. In addition, once the bandages are removed, a specialised surgical bra is worn for several weeks, to ensure you get the best possible results.

Results

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Of all plastic surgery procedures, breast reduction results in the quickest visible body-image changes. The physical pain caused by large breasts is removed, and a better proportioned body is the result. Bandages are applied following surgery to aid the healing process and minimise movement of the breasts in the initial phases of healing. Finally, the bandages are removed and a specialised surgical bra is worn for several weeks. Initially there will be a bit of swelling and bruising, however this will go down in a week or two. Once the swelling and bruising has subsided you should be able to gauge an idea of the final result of your breast reduction procedure. There will be slight scarring, which will fade over time so that is minimally visible.
